SOURCE TRANSPARENCY

Sources & Methodology

Our source system is designed to show readers what kind of material they are reading and where important information comes from.

A Clear Source Hierarchy

The Way Islam editorial explanations are distinct from Qur’an text, translation, Hadith and external scholarly commentary.

  1. Qur’an Text

Original Arabic Qur’an text should be obtained from a verified source and should not be altered through normal editorial workflows.

  2. Qur’an Translation

Translations are identified separately from the original Arabic text. Every public translation should include attribution, and usage rights must be confirmed before publication.

  3. Hadith

Before publication, a Hadith reference should be checked against its collection and reference system. Any quoted English wording must also identify and verify the translation source.

  4. Tafsir

Tafsir references should name the work and author or recognized attribution so interpretation is not confused with the original Qur’an text.

  5. Scholarly and Historical Sources

Scholarly opinions, historical claims and external commentary should be attributed clearly and presented with appropriate context.

  6. Reference Works and External Organizations

Reference works and external organizations should be named, evaluated for the use being made of them and never presented as The Way Islam itself.

  7. The Way Islam Editorial Explanation

Our explanatory writing is identified separately and should not be presented as Qur’an text, translation, Hadith, Tafsir or an external scholarly conclusion.

Translations

A translation is an interpretation of meaning and is not the original Arabic Qur’an text. We do not publish anonymous translations.

  1. Required Attribution

Every translation record should identify the translator, translation title, publisher, edition, language, usage rights and source.

  2. Rights and Publication

A translation remains unpublished until its attribution and usage rights are confirmed.

Differences of Interpretation

Some Islamic subjects include different scholarly interpretations. Where those differences are relevant to understanding the subject, The Way Islam aims to acknowledge them rather than present one interpretation as the only possible view without explanation.
